SPARTA —
The Hamilton County Junior/Senior High Fox Fire trapshooting team competed in both its final Amateur Trapshooting Association and World Shooting Recreational Complex Registered Youth Shoot of the 2009-10 season.
The junior varsity squad placed second in the team competition (WSRC-RYS), breaking 429 of 500 targets. The squad consists of sophomores Logan Smith (squad leader) and Tyler Welch, freshmen Tyler Laughard and Dalton Phillips, and junior Tim Hoover.
Teams from Southern Illinois participated in intermediate, junior varsity and varsity-level competitions.
In addition to being a member of the second-place JV squad, freshman Tyler Laughard also received individual awards by winning both first place (ATA) and second place (WSRC-RYS) C-Class, breaking 97 percent of his targets. It was Laughard’s career high score.
Senior Michael Webber won third place (WSRC-RYS) D-Class, breaking 90 percent of his targets, also successfully breaking his first 25-straight targets at the competition.
Other notable mention went to sophomore Clint Gwaltney for breaking his first 50-straight targets.
This was Fox Fire’s first competition to include athletes from varsity, JV and Intermediate (junior high). Fox Fire’s junior high team was represented by 15 boys and girls competing in three squads.
Fox Fire will be competing in the Scholastic Clay Target Program Illinois State Championship on Saturday, June 12.
