Roger O. Hollister

Roger O. Hollister, 67, of Rantoul, passed away at his home on the evening of Thursday, March 4, 2010, surrounded by family and friends.

Funeral services were Monday at Lux Memorial Chapel, 1551 E. Grove, Rantoul; Tom D. Wheeler officiated. Burial was at Maplewood Cemetery, Rantoul.

Lux Memorial Chapel, Rantoul, was in charge of arrangements.

Roger was born Feb. 24, 1943, in McLeansboro, a son of Eldon and Thelma (Johnson) Hollister. He married Betty (Trotter) Tuttle on Aug. 6, 1977, in Urbana; she survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Kendall (Khrissy) Hollister of Carterville and Chris Tuttle of Champaign; a daughter, Kendra (Wayne) Taylor of Carterville; three grandchildren, Macey and Brittan Hollister of Carterville and Travis Taylor of Carterville; his father, Eldon, of Rantoul; an uncle, Vernon Hollister of McLeansboro; and many friends, students and former players whom he considered family.

He was preceded in death by his mother.

Roger graduated from Southern Illinois University with a bachelor’s degree.

He was employed by Rantoul City Schools for 35 years as a teacher and basketball, baseball, track and cross country coach. Coach Hollister was inducted into the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame and was a charter member of “R.O.O.F.”

He was a member of Ten Mile Baptist Church in McLeansboro.

His hobbies included the St. Louis Cardinals, Illini sports and the Chicago Bears. He also enjoyed horses, spending time with family and traveling. He will be remembered for his endless e-mails and ornery sense of humor.
