CENTRALIA —
Margaret Louise Pennington, 78, of Centralia, died Thursday, July 22, 2010, at Odin Healthcare Center.
She was born Aug. 17, 1931, near Springerton, Hamilton County, the daughter of Charles Roy and Trecie Elizabeth (McGehee) McMeen.
Margaret married Fred Douglas Pennington on Aug. 19, 1952, in Jefferson County; he survives in Odin.
Other survivors include a son, Wilfred Pennington and wife Michelle of Centralia; a granddaughter, Trecie Pennington of Centralia; two sisters-in-law, Wilma McMeen of Fairfield and Grace Wright of Springfield; three nephews, Charles McMeen and wife Ruth of Fairfield, Doug McMeen and wife Lisa of Oklahoma and Mike Simmons and wife Linda of Fishers, Ind.; four nieces, Marjeana Parent and husband Duane and Shelia McMeen, all of Fairfield, and Linda Johnston and Susan Murray, both of Springfield; and several great-nephews and great-nieces.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by an infant brother, Darrell Arthur McMeen; one brother, James Lewis McMeen; two sisters-in-law, Betty Ann Simmons and Esther McCoy; and two brothers-in-law, Glenn Simmons and Jim Wright.
Margaret lived in Kell — where she attended Byars School — until 1942. Later, the family moved back to Springerton, where she graduated from Buckskin School.
She went to work in 1951 at Cheffords Manufacturing (later Airtex Products) in Fairfield and retired from there in 1986, having worked primarily in the water pump assembly department. During her employment at Airtex, she was a member of United Auto Workers Local 545.
She enjoyed working at the automotive parts factory and kept many scrapbooks chronicling the life of the company and its employees from the 1950s through the 1980s.
Mrs. Pennington enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She loved to go to rummage sales, and she set up many sales herself.
In earlier years, she made dolls for family and friends.
She was interested in genealogy and spent many hours helping her son do research on the family lines. They traveled to many courthouses and cemeteries throughout Illinois and Indiana.
She loved to garden, go camping and listen to concerts of gospel, country music or bluegrass. She loved to read and draw portraits of people, real and imagined.
She was a member of Anthony Wayne American Legion Post Ladies Auxiliary in Fairfield.
Margaret was baptized May 21, 1950, in a country creek by the Rev. Raymond Musgrave. She was a member of Springerton Christian Chapel Church.
Graveside services were held Monday at Springerton Cemetery with the Rev. Perry Schefelker of Trinity Lutheran Church in Centralia officiating.
Johnson Funeral Home of Fairfield was in charge of arrangements.
