Anniversary: McGill

NORTH PEKIN — James N. and Elfriede A. (Meiser) McGill of North Pekin recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.

Mr. McGill is from Hamilton County and a 1952 graduate of McLeansboro Township High School.

Jim and Elfriede were married July 12, 1960, at Hickory Hill Baptist Church. The Rev. Bill Auxier performed the ceremony.    

The celebration was a surprise anniversary dinner July 11 at the German Lindenhof Hall in Peoria, managed by their children. This followed Jim and Elfriede’s recent trip to Austria and Hungary visiting Elfriede’s relatives and sightseeing. 

Elfriede was born in Saarbrucken, Germany, and completed a kinderschwester (child nurse) degree. She retired from the Illinois State Lottery after 24 years. 

Jim graduated from Bradley University with a bachelor’s degree in accounting. He retired from Caterpillar after 43-plus years, most of which was doing corporate accounting.

Since retirement, both have worked as volunteers for different organizations helping others. 

After his retirement from Caterpillar, Jim worked part time as executive director and lobbyist for the Illinois Cast Metals Association. As such, many trips were made to Springfield getting one law passed and to Washington, D.C., for favorable consideration of ICMA’s needs.

The McGills have three children, Norman (Sherri) McGill of Dunlap, Monica McGill of Morton and Christopher (Julie) McGill of Groveland. They have 10 grandchildren.
