McLEANSBORO —
Kidnapping and child abduction charges have been filed against a woman accused of taking her son from a rural Hamilton County home in violation of an order of protection.
Brooke A. Burnett, 24, of Johnston City, is formally charged in Hamilton County Circuit Court with aggravated kidnapping, a Class X felony; child abduction, a Class 4 felony; and unlawful violation of an order of protection, a Class A misdemeanor.
At about 1:20 p.m. June 28, Burnett entered the residence of a relative in rural Thompsonville and took 4-year-old Landon Snethen, fleeing the area in a silver Dodge vehicle, Illinois State Police reported.
Snethen lives with a relative, who immediately called police, the ISP news release said.
Burnett is Snethen’s noncustodial mother, and there is an active order of protection against her, issued June 23 in Willliamson County, with the child listed as the protected person, the state police report and court records indicate.
Katherine Essary has been granted sole legal custody of Snethen, the abduction charge against Burnett indicates.
On the evening of June 28, state police and Franklin County Sheriff’s Department investigators determined through the use of her cell phone that Burnett was in the Okawville area.
Okawville police located Burnett and Snethen at an Okawville motel.
The child was not hurt; he was placed in protective custody, evaluated at a local hospital and later released to the custody of a relative.
Burnett was arrested around 6:30 p.m. June 28. Judge Terry Gamber set her bail at $100,000.
A preliminary hearing in her case is set for 10:30 a.m. July 15.
