McLEANSBORO —
A woman charged with kidnapping her son pleaded guilty last week to a misdemeanor charge of violation of an order of protection.
Brooke A. Burnett, 24, Johnston City, was facing two felony charges — kidnapping (Class X) and child abduction (Class 4) — but they were dropped as part of the plea agreement in Hamilton County Circuit Court.
She was accused of entering the residence of a relative in rural Thompsonville on June 28, taking 4-year-old Landon Snethen and fleeing the area in a silver Dodge vehicle, Illinois State Police reported.
Burnett is Snethen’s noncustodial mother, and an order of protection against her was issued against her June 23 in Williamson County, listing the child as the protected person, the state police report and court records indicated.
Judge Barry Vaughan, who placed Burnett on 24 months’ probation, admonished her in open court Aug. 5.
“When you disregard a court order, no good can come of that,” he told Burnett, standing before him in hand shackles and a green jail jumpsuit. “You can’t just take the law into your own hands and disregard a court order.”
Vaughan also ordered Burnett to submit to random alcohol and drug testing.
Police located Burnett and Snethen later on June 28 at an Okawville motel; the child was not harmed.
