Downtown streets, parking to be blocked during festival Saturday

McLEANSBORO — Mayor Dick Deitz announced special plans for downtown-area parking and traffic control during the final night of the Fall Festival on Saturday.

“In anticipation of a major crowd, we’re asking the cooperation of the citizens in helping us control the traffic so it can be a safe and enjoyable experience,” Deitz said.

The festival’s annual parade starts at 6 p.m. Saturday, and the parade route will come from East Main Street, go up around the square, and finish on South Washington Street.

Friday night, the city will block off all street parking spaces on Jackson Street from Cherry to Market streets; traffic will be able to flow, but there will be no parking on that section of Jackson Street, Deitz said.

At 4 p.m. Saturday, the city will block through traffic on Jackson Street from Cherry to Market streets, and there will be no parking on Cherry Street east to Locust Street. Traffic will also be blocked on Locust Street north to Main Street.

“We had trouble last year with so many people parking on Cherry Street from Jackson east to Locust that we couldn’t get any emergency vehicles in there, couldn’t even have through traffic,” Deitz said.

Immediately after the parade has concluded, he said, Main Street will be blocked off at Jackson Street in anticipation of the festival’s featured entertainment, Mel Tillis; the entire south and east sides of the public square will be closed off until such time as authorities reopen it, the mayor said.

“The public is encouraged to bring lawn chairs and sit on the east side of the square (in the street) during the entertainment after the parade,” he said.

Also, from 6 to 11 p.m. Saturday, large truck traffic will be diverted from Illinois Route 14 east to Hancock Street, then from Hancock to Market Street, where trucks may then go north or west, Deitz said.
