McLEANSBORO —
More prizes and better sound are in store for participants in this year’s Kiwanis Car Fest, an organizer of the annual event says.
Car Fest is set for Saturday, June 19, on the downtown square here.
Last year, 177 cars participated in Car Fest Kiwanian Jerry Prince said. This year, all cars will be judged, with $50 and a trophy awarded to the top 50 — rather than the top 40 — entries as well as to additional specialty-category entries, Prince said.
“There’s more and more car shows being done every year in Southern Illinois,” he said. “What separates us is we’re giving $3,000 in total cash awards plus offering quality regional entertainment.
“Plus we have some of the best facilities to accommodate a car show — a large courtyard and plenty of shade,” he added.
Car Fest’s featured entertainment will be the Duke Boys, a 1950s-’60s rock ’n’ roll show band and a familiar act at local events. The Duke Boys are scheduled to perform from approximately 5 to 8 p.m.; in the event of rain, the entertainment will be moved inside to the old McLeansboro High School gym, a block north of the square on Jerry Sloan Avenue.
And those attending Car Fest should hear announcements and music more clearly; Kiwanis Club and the local business community have provided a new sound system with digital-quality speakers, Prince said.
“It’s always been a challenge to cover all four corners of the square,” he said of past events.
Again this year, registration for Car Fest will be open until 4 p.m. on the day of the event to accommodate entrants who may be participating in other car shows the same day, Prince said. The awards ceremony will start about 5 p.m.
In addition to the car show and entertainment, Car Fest will include food vendors, a car corral, a no-fee swap meet, a Hot Wheels race and car show for kids, a fan belt toss, a grocery guess and a candy guess.
Proceeds from Car Fest go to the Kiwanis Youth Fund.
